The Twelve Signs of the Unworthy Man

Almost nobody is caught out by the obvious ones. It is never the shouting. It is the small, quiet, deniable stuff — the things that are easy to explain away one at a time, and impossible to explain away together.

  1. He cannot say I was wrong and mean it.
  2. Kind to you, cruel to the waiter.
  3. You feel lucky to have his attention.
  4. His words and his actions live in different universes.
  5. Your feelings are always somehow excessive.
  6. No real relationships of any depth.
  7. You cannot be yourself around him.
  8. He celebrates everyone’s wins but yours.
  9. Every conversation ends up about him.
  10. The approval of women, the respect of no men.
  11. Watch what delights him: connection, or advantage.
  12. His questions: does he wonder about you, or did he stop once he had enough?

None of these, with the single exception of the tenth, is a verdict on its own. Everyone has a bad day. The measure is not the moment. The measure is the pattern.
